Jan 29th 2009: LA Chamber

Woodbury University is the recipient of the Corporate Leadership Award from the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. Woodbury, which is now celebrating its 125th anniversary, was one of the founding members of the LA Chamber. More than 1,100 business and civic leaders attended the Chamber's 120th annual inaugural dinner at LA Live, where Automobile Club of Southern California CEO Thomas McKernan received the Chamber's Civic Medal of Honor and Occidental Petroleum Corp. Chairman and CEO Dr. Ray Irani was honored as a Distinguished Business Leader.

It has been 125 years since F.C. Woodbury founded Woodbury's Business College in downtown Los Angeles and there are many reasons to begin the celebration of our founding with pride including: the recent campus expansion in Burbank and it's positive effect on classroom instruction and campus life; the new San Diego campus location and the continued growth of that dynamic program; the continued effort of academic accreditation; our fantastic and dedicated faculty; our dynamic and inspiring student body; and our superb leadership team of President Kenneth R. Nielsen, Ed.D. and the Woodbury University Board of Trustees.

One of the things that make Woodbury such a special place is our long and rooted history with the city of Los Angeles. Many things have changed since 1884 when there were only 11,000 people in Los Angeles but one element of our history has remained the same - our membership in the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce. As one of three founding members of the Chamber, Woodbury has been present to witness the chamber grow and the area grow to one of the most vibrant and commercially viable areas in the nation. The University, it has often been said, has always been a reflection of the city's ambition and evolution as a major metropolitan hub and premier destination the world over.

May 3rd: Gala

The Woodbury University Gala is a vital source of scholarship dollars for our University where 86% of the students require financial aid and where over 70% are the first in their family to attend college.

This prestigious event features a fashion show presented by the Department of Fashion Design and is a showcase for the ideas and designs of the fashion design students. Over 600 guests attend the Gala each year.

The theme for the Gala 2009 is ¡Viva Verde! What’s Green, What’s New, What’s Green with You? We know businesses have been turning green for some time, and now there is irrefutable evidence that it makes good business sense as well as civic sense. From changing out incandescent light bulbs in production rooms, to growing disease resistant cotton, raising “peace” silkworms and recycling clothing, there are many approaches to consider and Woodbury’s faculty stand ready with their expertise to offer input and suggestions.
